It’s back to school season and I’m here to have a conversation around period poverty. Nearly 1 in 5 American girls have missed school because they didn’t have access to period protection. It’s so sad to know that so many young girls are forced to miss out on valuable opportunities because they don’t have the proper products or have to resort to using things like toilet paper or clothes, which is extremely uncomfortable. This back-to-school season, Always is on a mission to help close this gap, first off by raising awareness about the lack of access to period products that are affecting millions of girls in the U.S. and then by taking action to help #EndPeriodPoverty. For decades, Always has been empowering millions of girls through puberty and confidence education, providing products to girls in need, and most recently by tackling societal barriers through the Always #LikeAGirl movement. Within this post sponsored by Always, I’m sharing a couple ways you can join forces with Always and help #endperiodpoverty
Period Poverty is real, especially in the school system. Just last year I went to visit an all-girls school within my community and it broke my heart to hear the counselor stress the issue over the need for pads (it’s an all girl school – you would think they should have an overflow). The lack of sanitary products causes girls not only to miss out on all the important classes but also all the opportunities to learn, grow and build confidence at school. And let just be honest it’s embarrassing, especially at a vulnerable time like puberty.
BUT WE can help!
Use social media- Join in with Always on this social call to action, this is a great step to ensure that, together, we can help end period poverty. By raising awareness, you’re helping to make it easier to tackle the problem. Helping raise awareness on how t this is an issue for American school girls and providing ways to directly help.
Buy & Donate
If you’re out at a supermarket or placing your weekly online household shopping orders, why not buy some extra pads and donate. Additionally, every purchase of Always pads from now until September 8th will also trigger a donation of product to girls in need in partnership with Feeding America.
Raise awareness of American girls’ lack of access to period products, and the impact it has on them missing school and their confidence. Share your own thoughts and feelings toward period poverty. Tell your friends all about it and speak with your teenage girls so they can help out a friend in need. Think about your younger self and the struggles you and how you can use your experience to helps others.
To #EndPeriodPoverty Always wants to remove the stigma around the issue and create a conversation that encourages people to better understand the problem, and to support girls who need products this school year. Always goal is to Donate an additional 15 million period products to Feeding America, a long-standing partner, through the organization’s school pantry program, which provides food, toiletries, and personal care products to kids who are most in need. Remember Every purchase of Always pads until September 8 will trigger a donation of product to girls in need.
